About the Pilgrimage

The DunnMedia crew will be travelling to the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Martyrs in Auriesville, New York to capture a historic moment in the century-long devotion to the Canadian Martyrs — also known as the North American Martyrs:

For the first time ever, the cherished relic of St. Jean de Brébeuf—his skull—will be carried in solemn procession along the riverbank where his fellow missionaries, Sts. Isaac Jogues, René Goupil, and John de Lalande, gave their lives in Auriesville, NY.  Other relics in procession will be the bones of fellow missionaries St. Charles Garnier, St. Gabriel Lalemant and a relic of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, Lilly of the Mohawks.

It was October 17, 1646, when Fr. Isaac Jogues, while en route to visit his friend Fr. Brébeuf in Huronia, was captured and brought south to Auriesville, where he was martyred the following day.

The procession will be led by Fr. John O’Brien (Director, Martyrs’ Shrine, Midland, Ontario),  Bishop Edward Scharfenberger, Albany NY, and Msgr. Roger Landry, Director, Pontifical Mission Societies, USA. Fr. John O’Brien will give a powerful talk to pilgrims in the afternoon, followed by a time for veneration of the relics. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Beatification of the North American Martyrs and the 400th anniversary of the arrival of St. Jean  de Brébeuf in Quebec.
